The most crucial health official in Louisiana said in the internal note of the State Health Department on Thursday that he would no longer operate media campaigns or health fairs to promote vaccinations against diseases that can be avoided.
Official, Dr. Ralph L. Abraham, Louisiana general surgeon, wrote in a note that the state “will encourage every patient to discuss the risk and benefits of vaccination with his supplier”, but “does not promote mass vaccination.”
The letter came on the day the US Senate confirmed Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who asked questions about vaccines as the Modern US Secretary for Health. It was not clear, however, whether the note came in response to a change in federal leadership.
“Vaccines should be treated with nuance, recognizing the differences between seasonal vaccines and childhood vaccinations, which are an crucial part of providing immunity to our children,” wrote Dr. Abraham, a former Republican congressmen.
A spokeswoman for the Health Department in Louisiana did not immediately answer the questions about the scope of the directive on Thursday evening and how this can affect the distribution of vaccines.
The Health Department of Nowy Orleana, Louisiana’s largest city, quickly said that he would not follow the leader of the state.
“We will continue to promote childhood and seasonal vaccination and expand our local efforts to fill all gaps left in a fresh direction,” said Dr. Jennifer Avegno, director of the Health Department at Nowy Orleana.
The City Health Department is the only one that works regardless of the Health Department in Louisiana.
In his note, Dr. Abraham said that the State Department of Health would cease to promote vaccinations through “partnerships” and “parish health units”.
He wrote that health officials should not instruct “natural persons to receive any vaccines”, but instead they should provide data on reduced health risk associated with obtaining vaccinations.
“In the case of many diseases, vaccine are one tool in a set of tools for combating a stern illness,” wrote Dr. Abraham, adding that health officials should focus on “meeting people where they are.”
During the Covid pandemic, Louisiana had among the lowest vaccination rates in the country, and healthcare staff fought to combat disinformation on the safety of coronavirus vaccinations.
Dr. Abraham also published on Thursday Public specialtyT, along with his deputy surgeon, T. Coleman, criticizing how the state and federal health authorities reacted to Pandemia.
Dr. Abraham and Dr. Coleman wrote that the implementation of vaccine fines was “a crime against personal autonomy, which will take over years.”
In June, Dr. Abraham was appointed a Louisiana surgeon by the Governor of State Jeff Landra, a Republican. Last year, Landra replaced John Bel Edwards, a democratic governor who led Louisiana through Pandemia. Mr. Edwards fought with state legislators and Mr. Landra – the then prosecutor general – to implement vaccination fines.
Dr. Abraham did not mention Covid in his vaccination note, which was provided by Dr. Pete Crouguhan, deputy secretary of the department.
The Times-Picayune from Modern Orleans previously reported on the note.
The US Department of Health and Social Welfare did not immediately answer at the request for comment on Thursday evening.
