“Current Love” podcast: If you want this kind of love, don’t expect it to be straightforward

When Samiya Mushtaq grew up, she imagined marrying a nice Muslim man and age 21. But while studying to become a psychiatrist at a medical school, she realized that her husband could not meet her emotional needs – something she deeply wanted. Despite the shame she felt, she divorced.

In this episode, Mishtaq shares the twists and turns of his unexpected second chance for love, where the service is in the center. From work in healthcare during the pandemic to building a family, to undertaking shocking trips to Gaza, she found what she really needed in marriage – only after abandoning what she thought.

The memory of Samiya Mushtaq will be published by Daybreak Press the next winter.

This episode inspired her essay from 2023: “Do we have to feel ashamed of divorce?”
