It is arduous to shock a lifeguard. “We see the worst of the worst and stupidest of the stupidest,” Abdullah Pratt, an emergency medicine doctor at the University of Chicago Medicine, recently told me.
I talked to him about situations he witnessed in ER, in particular those that made him change his own behavior. At the beginning he told me that he would never wear crocodiles when he was snowy or icy outside.
I confidently confessed that only the night, I slipped on a pair and traveled the frozen driveway to remove the garbage.
“There is no way,” said Dr. Pratt. “Please, don’t tell me you broke the cube.”
In winter he sees “Specific injuries for crocodiles” once a week. Shoes “do not provide grip and do not provide any cube support,” he said. “People are flying, just like their crocodiles.”
Dr. Pratt is not willing to risk injuries for a quick case – and after talking to him I am not.

Do not cut the avocado in a hurry.
Adair Landra, ER doctor at Harvard Medical School Brigham and Women’s Hospital, said that knife injuries in the kitchen were one of the most common injuries she saw.
Avocados are the main culpritDr. Landra added. “Sometimes I even ask:” Oh, did you cut avocado? “She said. “And like:” Yes! How did you know? “
Bugels are also a source of many knife -related injuries, said Gregory Sugalski, full of the rescue rescue department at the Hackensack University Medical Center. He often sees patients “cut their hands cutting bits.”
The best way to cut something like avocado or Bajgla is to utilize a sheltered, ineffective surface, such as a wooden chopping board, and cutting off the body, said Matt Shannon, rescue medical director at the University of Florida Health.
“Never eat in your hand,” he said.
Don’t trust the trampoline.
Several doctors said they had avoided trampolines. “They are a broken bone factory,” said Dr. Sugalski. “We see fractures, dislocations, spinal injuries, head injuries all the time.”
According to A in 2009–2018, over 800,000 trampoline injuries were reported 2022 study. And most occur when many people jump together, so American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that people jump one person at once. He also suggests making sure that there are appropriate lining around the bars and springs and discourages the somersault and the reverse (one of the most common causes of indefinite spine injuries).
Dr. Sugalski has three children. “When I hear a” trampoline, “he said,” I am like: “Ugh, can we go to this birthday party?”
Don’t chase strange dogs.
Dr. Pratt is a dog lover, but after seeing many dog attacks in ER, he does not stroke unknown dogs. “You don’t know what kind of trauma has been taken over and what it triggers,” he said.
“I think that most dog owners have never seen what it looks like for a dog who is condemning someone,” said Dr. Pratt. “I have.” He also said that he didn’t put his face too close to any dog.
If you do not know the dog, even if it is your neighbor’s dog, it is better not to approach him, said Dr. Sugalski. Most dog injuries in the United States, Scientists foundThey are inflicted by pets, not stray.
With their own children who “are obsessed with dogs”, Dr. Sugalski added: “I say:” Let’s say hello from a distance “because you never know.”
Do not ignore sudden symptoms.
Dr. Landra seriously treats his own unexpected and extreme symptoms. If you experience such a thing as severe chest pain or paralysis of the body part, immediately come to ER, she said.
“I understand that there will be medical costs and time on the ambulance, but they should not prevent you from saving your own life,” added Dr. Landry.
And if you have symptoms of heart attack or stroke, don’t go to the hospital, said Michael E. Silverman, vice president of the Emergency Medicine Department at the Morristown Medical Center in Modern Jersey.
He saw people do it for years and it can lead to accidents and injuries. Dr. Silverman added, paramedics have defibrillators and can warn the hospital about the preparation of a heart syndrome, saving valuable time.
Don’t go without a helmet.
If you are not wearing a helmet, whether for sports or e-bikers, “you are looking for a grave injury,” said Dr. Sugalski. “We see how people come with helmets and without helmets, and it’s night and day.”
For example, the utilize of bicycle helmets was shown Significantly reduce the risk of a serious head injury. That is why Dr. Sugalski always wears it, he said: “You are mostly leaving.”
I made many of the above -mentioned errors, but I will stop. I would prefer to talk to doctors than to be put on an ambulance to see them.
